Bad Breath - How A Simple Step Can
Help Stop Halitosis
It's a common
misconception among many people that bad breath is caused by
the types of food we eat and drink.
In actual fact,
most cases of bad breath are caused by bacteria that
we all have - and need - in our mouths. When present in normal
amounts they generally cause no problems - it's only when there
are unusually high levels of these bacteria that bad breath can
occur.
The good news is that
there are many different things you can do to keep these
bacteria in check and help avoid bad breath.
Don't Neglect
Your Tongue!
One easy way to help
stop halitosis is to keep your tongue in tip top
condition.
We all know the
importance of brushing our teeth properly, but many of us have
a tendency to overlook our tongues and neglect them
somewhat.
However, many bad
breath experts reckon that keeping our tongues clean and cared
for is a crucially important factor in keeping our breath
smelling fresh.
Why Your Tongue
Is A Magnet For Bad Breath Bacteria
That's because the
majority of bad breath bacteria live deep below the surface of
your tongue, between its tiny brush-like fibres.
In fact, not only do
they live there, these bacteria positively flourish
there!
Bad breath bacteria are
anaerobic, meaning that they can survive without oxygen.
Because your tongue is continually carpeted by saliva, oxygen
doesn't reach them and so they have a field day!
How To Clean
Your Tongue Properly
In order to blitz these
bad breath bacteria, experts reckon we should scrape our
tongues after each time we brush our teeth.
A gentle scrape is the
key here - your tongue is sensitive and tender so don't feel
you need to give it a hard scrub. That'll only make your tongue
sore or even bleed, which will just cause you even more
problems in the long run.
Starting from the front
of your tongue to the back, gently scrape the surface of your
tongue, trying to remove as much mucus build-up as possible.
You can buy specially designed tongue scrapers, and some
toothbrushes also now have an in-built tongue scraper -
I especially like the Colgate 360 toothbrush for this
particular purpose.
How To Stop Bad
Breath Bacteria From Coming Back
Once you've given your
tongue a gentle scraping, always make sure that you thoroughly
rinse your scraper under some hot water.
Try to do this around a
half dozen times to make sure that any germs on your scraper
are blitzed, thereby preventing you from passing bacteria back
into your mouth the next time you clean your tongue.
Beating bad breath
doesn't have to be complicated - and it's most certainly not
impossible!
